Both classes: FYI

By the way, guys, you must bring all your homework that was due yesterday to class this coming Monday.

:)

American: homework due 3/8

Hey guys,

I hope you had a fantastic snow day! That day won't be made up at the end of the year, so we have to pretend like we didn't miss a class and just keep moving on with your homework. In light of that:

- Read chapters 4 - 7 in Great Gatsby
-
Write a newspaper article in which you report on one of Gatsby's opulent parties. Interview guests, speculate about the host, describe the scene, the purpose, etc. This should be 1 - 2 pages long; it'd be fun if it was in newspaper type and in two columns. Maybe you can even find a picture or two to include? The more creative the better!
- Continue work on your vocab list

Let me know if you have any questions!

Ally

British: homework due 3/8

Hey guys,

I am SO bummed that we missed a day of Silas Marner! As you know - this is (ahem) a *favorite* of mine, and I really wanted that class time together. ...But I'm not gonna lie; the surprise day off was lovely!

So - here's your homework for this week. I realize it's a little hefty, but we can't afford to get behind. Thanks in advance for your understanding and good attitudes -- I really cherish that!

- Finish Silas Marner
-
Write a 5-paragraph essay (you can keep it shorter than normal; 2 - 3 pages is fine) on one of the following topics
1. The individual vs. the community
2. The significance of love and relationship
3. Sin of greed and its outworkings
- Come with your completed vocab list

Let me know if you have any questions!

British: homework due 2/23

Hey guys,

Just your friendly reminder: your homework was to read chapters 1 - 7 in Silas Marner.

You were also to do one of the following essays:

1. What significance does the novel's title, Great Expectations, have for the story? In what ways does Pip have “great expectations”?

2. Discuss the character of Miss Havisham. What themes does she embody? What experiences have made her as she is? Is she a believable character? How does she relate to Pip and Estella?

3. What role does social class play in Great Expectations? What lessons does Pip learn from his experience as a wealthy gentleman? How is the theme of social class central to the novel?

4. Throughout the novel, Pip is plagued by powerful feelings of guilt and shame, and everywhere he goes he tends to encounter symbols of justice—handcuffs, gallows, prisons, and courtrooms. What is the role of guilt in the novel? What does it mean to be “innocent”?

This essay is more informal than a 5-paragraph paper. It is more like a personal response. Still, the more organized you can be, the better.

Also, in answer to Cat's question: yes, you should turn in your vocab on Monday as well.

Have a happy week!
Ally

American: homework due 2/23

Hey class,

Just a reminder: your homework was to finish the book and write a 5-paragraph character paper on the character of your choice. You should also turn in your vocab next week, which I forgot to mention. (Had I assigned you vocab at the beginning of the book? Please tell me if I didn't...)

Have a fantastic week!

British: homework due 2/16

Missed you TONS. I can't wait to hear how the debate went (if you did it) and how you all are. I was thinking of you so much while I was gone. (I mean... not THAT much because I was on vacation. ;))

Your homework for Monday:
- Read Chapters 43 - 58

Since I don't think Mrs. Hoover gave you any homework, please pass this assignment on to your classmates.
